Advertising value equivalency remains in widespread use across Indian marketing reports despite being withdrawn as a recommended measure by international communications standards bodies more than a decade ago, according to Crosshairs Communication.

The New Delhi agency, which has operated as a PR marketing company since 2005, says the metric persists because it produces a large monetary figure that presents well to leadership while measuring something that has little connection to commercial outcomes.

Advertising value equivalency estimates the cost of buying advertising space equivalent to the space a piece of editorial coverage occupied, sometimes multiplied by an arbitrary figure to reflect editorial credibility.

It values coverage by how much room it took up," said Stuti Jalan, Founder and Managing Director of Crosshairs Communication. A long feature in a publication your buyers have never read scores well. A short mention in the one trade title that actually decides whether you get stocked scores badly. Any agency optimizing for that number will chase the wrong coverage, and they will be doing exactly what the client asked.

The agency recommends four alternatives it says are both measurable and defensible to a finance team.
Share of voice within a category, measured against named competitors over a fixed period, which the agency describes as the most immediately legible metric for leadership because it is comparative.
Message penetration, meaning the proportion of coverage that communicated the two or three points a brand needs understood, rather than simply mentioning the brand.

Branded search volume in the days following significant coverage, measured against a baseline, which Crosshairs says captures the large share of readers who do not click a link but search the company name later.

Enquiries that reference press, captured through a single additional question on an enquiry form.
The agency stresses that baselines must be recorded before a campaign begins, a step it says most brands skip, leaving no way to demonstrate change afterwards. Recording existing share of voice and normal branded search volume takes under half a day, according to the agency, and makes every subsequent report defensible.

Crosshairs also advises reviewing these figures quarterly rather than weekly, noting that share of voice and search volume move slowly and that short-term readings produce noise which prompts brands to abandon strategies before they have had time to work.

Crosshairs also cautioned against performance-based PR contracts in which fees depend on coverage volume, arguing that such arrangements push agencies towards easily obtained placements and create an incentive to buy editorial-looking coverage without disclosure. The agency recommends that brands require contractual disclosure of any paid placement in advance.
"PR attribution is imperfect and it always will be," Jalan said. "The answer is not to invent a precise number. It is to use several honest signals together and look at where they point."

Founded in 2005, Crosshairs Communication is headquartered in New Delhi with a Mumbai desk and an affiliate network across India, working across beauty, fashion, food and beverage, hospitality, wellness and luxury. Its clients have included Kiehl's India, Crocs India, Accor India, Cornitos and OBEETEE Carpets.
