Piping systems used in mining, cement, pulp and paper, recycling, and industrial processing are often exposed to severe abrasion, erosion, and impact. High-velocity solids, slurry, tailings, fibre, sand, powders, and mixed-material streams can rapidly wear through conventional carbon steel, stainless steel, plastic, or ceramic-lined pipework, particularly in elbows, reducers, junctions, and other areas where flow direction or velocity changes.

Premature pipe failure can lead to unplanned shutdowns, production losses, emergency repairs, and repeated replacement campaigns. In abrasive transport systems, piping selection is closely linked to plant reliability, maintenance frequency, and total operating cost.

Designed for Abrasive Material Flow
CastoTube® is an internally hardfaced pipe designed for transporting abrasive materials in demanding industrial environments. Alloy selection and single or double pass deposition can be specified to match the abrasion, erosion and impact conditions in each section of a system.

The internal cladding protects the wear surface in straight pipe sections, elbows, reducers, Y-pieces, and other custom-fabricated piping components used in abrasive material transport systems. CastoTube® can be configured to suit complex layouts and installation constraints, with different diameters, lengths, flange requirements, and connection systems depending on the application.

Where Wear Concentrates
In mining and backfill operations, pipework is often exposed to a combination of abrasive particles, velocity, pressure, and directional changes. These conditions can create localized wear zones, especially at bends and reductions, where turbulence and particle impact increase. If not addressed during the design or replacement stage, these points can become recurring maintenance issues.

A practical example comes from a cement plant where pneumatic waste transport from the crusher to the kiln created severe wear in both straight sections and elbows. The transported material included plastics, textiles, metals, and paper moving at approximately 25 m/s. Previous installations using stainless steel and ceramic pipe lasted about four months, requiring multiple corrective maintenance interventions each year.

Castolin Eutectic supplied 128 metres of CastoTube®, including straight sections, six elbows, DN150 PN10/16 flanges, and a flexible section to accommodate installation tolerances. The system operated for approximately 12 months between maintenance interventions, tripling the previous service interval. This result demonstrates the value of matching pipe construction to the actual wear mechanism rather than relying only on standard pipe materials.

Evaluating Total Operating Cost
Wear-resistant piping may cost more initially than standard pipe, but the comparison should be based on total operating cost. In abrasive applications, extending pipe life can reduce replacement frequency, maintenance labour, and downtime, often making it more cost-effective over time.
