Increasing Demand for Premium Basmati Rice in Egypt

South Asian exporters scale up supply chains to meet surging demand across Egyptian retail and hospitality sectors.

Egypt is one of the fastest growing markets for aromatic grain imports in the MENA region. Currently, it ranks third behind the UAE and Qatar. Based on new data, shipments of premium basmati rice from the Indian subcontinent are being delivered to Egyptian ports in unprecedented numbers. This is a result of a substantial change in the cooking habits of Egyptian households and the food service industry.
Driving Factors
Egypt’s food retail industry is in the midst of a major transformation that is quiet, but significant. The Basmati rice and/or long grain rice that households are now purchasing reflects the growing middle class and their preferences for a rice variety with better nutritional value. In addition, Basmati rice is perceived to be healthier due to its low glycemic index. The hospitality sector is purchasing larger volumes of rice from South Asian exporters, which reflects the hospitality sector’s response to customer demand for fine food.
Quality Standards
“There have been many positive changes with North African food markets,” commented Meenakshi Narang, Head of Global Trade Analytics, Apex Agri-Exports. “Today's consumer in Egypt takes their time when choosing products. They check the length of the grains, the duration of aging, and the size of the grain aromatics. As a responsible manufacturer and exporter, we have placed great importance on implementing quality measures from the enriched fertile lands to the final shipping container. This ensures that all grains maintain their natural fragrance and long texture when they reach the Egyptian ports.”
Exporters are increasing their milling and planning processing and logistics operations. In high demand are the Traditional Aged Basmati, the 1121 Long Grain Basmati, and Pusa Basmati.
Private Label & Bulk Solutions
Considering the aspirations of Egypt's private food brands, exporters are now selling food in private labels. Other options include bulk shipments in 20, 25, and 50 kg bags made of Jute or Polypropylene bags.
Future Outlook
The signs are positive. Strengthening bilateral trade pacts between countries in South Asia and Egypt will smooth out hurdles in the supply chain. Add to this, continual investment in port facilities in both locations will result in quicker shipping. The Global Rice Trade Initiative foresees an increase in the import of higher quality rice as the tastes of Egyptian’s continue to evolve.
