I Performed CPR on a Stranger on the Rail Runner Express—Here's What Happened Next

The morning train from Santa Fe was packed like always. I had my coffee, my laptop, and the usual Tuesday routine. Then everything changed in seconds. A man across the aisle suddenly slumped forward.

The morning train from Santa Fe was packed like always. I had my coffee, my laptop, and the usual Tuesday routine. Then everything changed in seconds.
A man across the aisle suddenly slumped forward. His wife screamed. People froze.

I didn't think. I just moved.
When Training Becomes Real
Two years ago, I took a CPR class. Honestly? I almost skipped it. It was a Saturday morning, and I had better things to do. But something made me show up.

That Saturday morning saved a life on Tuesday.

I dropped to my knees beside the stranger. His lips were turning blue. No pulse. My hands found the center of his chest, and I started compressions. One, two, three. The rhythm from my CPR Training in New Mexico came flooding back like muscle memory.

His wife was sobbing. Other passengers pulled out their phones and called 911. Someone ran to find the conductor.

I kept going. Thirty compressions. Two breaths. Again. And again.
The Moment Everything Changed
After what felt like forever but was probably two minutes, he gasped. His eyes fluttered. Color returned to his face.

The Rail Runner stopped at the next station. Paramedics rushed in and took over. As they wheeled him out, his wife grabbed my hand. Through tears, she whispered two words: "Thank you."

I couldn't speak. I just nodded.
Why I'm Writing This
That man survived. I got a message from his daughter three weeks later. He's back home, playing with his grandkids.

I looked around that crowded train car, and nobody else knew what to do. Fifty people, and I was the only one who'd learned CPR.

What if I hadn't been there?

What if nobody had taken the boring or the best CPR training course in New Mexico that Saturday?
You Never Know When
We think emergencies happen to other people. In movies. In news stories. Not on our morning commute. Not in our office. Not at our kid's soccer game.

Until they do.

Learning CPR isn't about becoming a hero. It's about being ready when someone's mother, father, husband, or wife needs you.

That stranger on the train? He was someone's everything. And now he gets to go to his granddaughter's wedding next month.
Because someone knew what to do.

Don't wait for a Saturday, you feel like it. Don't put it off another month. New Mexico CPR Training courses are affordable and take just a few hours.

Those few hours could mean someone gets to grow old. Gets to say goodbye. Gets one more Christmas.

If you're in New Mexico and want to be prepared like I was, check out Tempo of Life. They offer comprehensive training that turns ordinary people into lifesavers.
That could be you. Next Tuesday. On a train. At the mall. Anywhere.

Be ready.
