Under the scheme, households and small businesses across Victoria can access state-of-the-art battery storage systems at significantly reduced cost.

⚡ Program Overview & Benefits

From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government is providing a ~30 % discount on the upfront cost of installing eligible small-scale battery systems when paired with new or existing rooftop solar systems.
The discount is delivered via the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), using Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs).
Eligible batteries have a usable capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh (though the rebate applies to the first 50 kWh of usable capacity).
The program is not means-tested — homeowners, small businesses, and community organisations may apply, provided other technical and installation criteria are met.

The rebate is expected to gradually taper over time through to 2030.

To qualify and participate under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, applicants generally must:

Install a battery (nominal 5 kWh–100 kWh) either with new or existing rooftop solar systems.

Use a CEC‐approved battery product and qualified installer.
Ensure the installation meets electrical safety and regulatory standards, with a Certificate of Electrical Compliance or its equivalent.
Understand that only one battery rebate per property is allowed.
Be aware that the rebate is applied at point-of-sale (installers deduct the benefit via STCs) — homeowners generally don’t have to file separately.
