Uddami India Foundation empowers underprivileged youth and women in Kolkata through free digital education, life skills, and community support for better livelihoods.

Uddami India Foundation (UIF), a registered non-profit organization based in South Kolkata, is making remarkable strides in transforming the lives of underprivileged youth and women by providing free computer education, life skills, and community-based empowerment programmes aimed at creating sustainable livelihoods.

Founded in 1999 as an informal initiative and formally established in 2005, UIF began with a single goal: to empower disadvantaged communities with access to education and employable skills. Over the last two decades, it has impacted thousands of lives through its flagship Uddami Computer Training Center (UCTC) and a growing suite of social development programmes.

A Grassroots Movement Turned Scalable Model

The journey of UIF began in a small rented room where a few volunteers offered basic computer training to underprivileged youth in South Kolkata. What started as a community initiative evolved into a registered Trust governed by a board of trustees, many of whom were former students of the foundation itself.

Today, UIF is a recognized FCRA-approved organization (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act), holds certifications under Section 12A and 80G of the Indian Income Tax Act, and works with national and international partners including educational institutions, corporations, consulates, and other NGOs.

Core Focus Areas
1. Digital Education and Skill Development

At the heart of UIF is the Uddami Computer Training Center (UCTC) which provides:

Free access to computers and internet.

Courses in basic and advanced digital literacy.

Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Online safety and digital communication.

2. Spoken English and Soft Skills

Recognizing that communication is key to employability, UIF offers spoken English training, resume building, interview preparation, and public speaking workshops.

3. Teacher Training and Peer Mentorship

Advanced students are offered teacher training so they can assist future batches, creating a sustainable model where learners become leaders.

4. Women’s Empowerment Initiatives

UIF actively engages women and girls through:

Feminine hygiene awareness campaigns.

Menstrual health management training.

Gender equality workshops.

Mental health awareness and counseling support.

In collaboration with the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata, UIF’s flagship programme, “Power to Empower”, provided over 30 women with training in leadership, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and digital marketing. This project culminated in participants launching community-based business prototypes.

Impact Snapshot

Over 20,000 individuals (youth, women, and children) impacted through various programmes since inception.

Hundreds of women educated on reproductive health, menstrual hygiene, and gender-based safety.

Dozens of students placed in jobs after completing UIF’s computer training and soft skill courses.

Collaborations with multiple schools and slum communities for community education and health outreach.

Leadership and Governance

Led by Harshamanjari Nanda, Executive Director, UIF is governed by a team of dedicated trustees, many of whom were once students of the foundation themselves. This student-to-leader pathway reflects the organization’s commitment to grassroots leadership development.

“We envision a world where every young person has access to the skills and support needed to live a life of dignity and purpose, regardless of where they are born,” says Nanda.

Community Outreach and Health Initiatives

UIF actively runs:

Community libraries and education support in slum areas.

Health and hygiene awareness drives in collaboration with local health workers.

Workshops for children on safe touch, emotional intelligence, and self-expression.

Support sessions in red-light districts for trafficking survivors and children born into systemic exploitation.

“In a city where inequality still defines opportunity, UIF is changing the narrative — one skill, one girl, one child at a time,” says board member and former student Rajib Mondal.

Partnerships and Support

UIF is open to collaborations with:

CSR initiatives (under Corporate Social Responsibility).

Academic institutions for internship and volunteer exchange.

Government departments for public health and education partnerships.

Individual donors and foundations seeking grassroots impact.

Every contribution counts, from a volunteer’s time to a corporate CSR grant. UIF ensures complete transparency in spending and impact measurement, with periodic reporting available on request.

Recognition and Media Features

UIF’s work has been featured in:

The Times of India

Northeast Herald

US Consulate Public Affairs

Local Bengali and Hindi press outlets

For example, their menstrual health campaign in Kolkata’s slums was covered by the Times of India in 2023, and their “Power to Empower” project with the U.S. Consulate drew significant regional media attention.
