Patrick Wales-Dinan has established himself as a highly respected coach in cross country and track & field, known for developing competitive athletes and guiding programs to sustained success. His coaching career spans high school, NCAA Division III, and Division I levels, reflecting a steady progression built on results, leadership, and athlete development.
Wales-Dinan joined the Duke University Blue Devils coaching staff in the 2011–12 season as an assistant women’s cross country coach under head coach Kevin Jermyn, while also contributing to the men’s and women’s track & field programs. His arrival at Duke followed a highly successful tenure at Williams College, where he served as an assistant coach for cross country and as the distance coach for the women’s track & field team.
During his time at Williams, Wales-Dinan coached four All-Americans and guided Jennifer Gossels to an NCAA Division III national championship in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter events. In 2011, he made NCAA history by overseeing four national championship qualifiers in the women’s 10,000 meters—the first coach in Division III to achieve that milestone. His athletes also produced some of the fastest times in program history, highlighting both depth and performance consistency.
Beyond individual success, Wales-Dinan played a key role in leading the Ephs’ cross country teams to consecutive NCAA Division III Championship appearances, including a runner-up finish for the men’s team in 2009. His coaching approach balanced strategic preparation with long-term athlete growth, earning recognition across the collegiate running community.
Wales-Dinan’s coaching foundation began after graduating from Bates College in 2005, where he was a two-time All-New England runner, a state champion in the 800 meters, and a member of an NCAA Championship–qualifying cross country team. He went on to serve as head coach at Traip Academy and later as an assistant coach at the University of Southern Maine, where he helped guide teams to multiple conference titles.
Certified as a USATF Level II Endurance Events coach, Patrick Wales-Dinan continues to be recognized for his technical expertise, disciplined training philosophy, and commitment to developing athletes both on and off the course. His career reflects a consistent dedication to excellence, making him a valued leader in collegiate distance running.
