Vero Beach, Florida, August 2026 — Highwaymen Art Specialists Inc. is highlighting the life and legacy of Alfred Hair, the talented artist and visionary entrepreneur whose ideas helped shape the remarkable story of the Florida Highwaymen.
Born in Fort Pierce in 1941, Hair studied with renowned Florida landscape painter A.E. “Bean” Backus. He developed a vibrant, energetic painting style characterized by vivid colors, dramatic skies, glowing horizons, and confident brushwork.
Hair’s influence, however, extended beyond his own paintings. During an era when segregation severely restricted opportunities for Black artists, he encouraged other young painters to create their own economic opportunities. Rather than depending on galleries that would not represent them, the artists produced Florida landscapes efficiently, framed them using affordable materials, and sold them directly to the public.
“Alfred Hair was not only an exceptionally talented artist; he was also an innovator,” said Roger Lightle of Highwaymen Art Specialists. “His vision showed other artists that they could use their talent to earn a living, even when the traditional art world refused to give them an opportunity.”
An Artistic and Entrepreneurial Legacy
Hair and the artists he influenced brought their paintings directly to businesses, offices, hotels, residents, and travelers throughout Florida. Their roadside and door-to-door sales created an independent marketplace that allowed their work to reach buyers across the state.
Although Hair’s life ended tragically in 1970 when he was only 29 years old, his influence continued through the artists he inspired. Decades later, the original 26 Florida Highwaymen received widespread cultural and historical recognition. In 2004, the group was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.
Today, Alfred Hair’s paintings are admired for their distinctive energy, expressive color, and importance within the Highwaymen movement. His story also represents resourcefulness, leadership, artistic independence, and perseverance in the face of discrimination.
