Milaidhoo Maldives, 9 June 2026 – Milaidhoo Maldives celebrated World Ocean Day 2026 by welcoming students, teachers and parents from nearby Kudarikilu School for a day dedicated to marine education, environmental awareness and hands-on conservation activities within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll.

Inspired by this year's World Ocean Day theme, "Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean," the resort hosted a meaningful programme designed to help young members of the local community better understand the importance of protecting the Maldives' unique marine environment.

The celebration began with Milaidhoo's leadership team gathering in the island's lagoon, highlighting the resort's close connection with the ocean that surrounds and sustains the island. Located in one of the Maldives' richest marine ecosystems, Milaidhoo continues to place environmental stewardship at the heart of its sustainability initiatives.

A group of 15 students, accompanied by teachers and parents from Kudarikilu Island, spent the day learning about coral reefs, marine biodiversity and ocean conservation through interactive sessions led by Milaidhoo's marine team, Ocean Stories.

Resident Marine Biologist Nairika Bharucha introduced students to the diverse marine life found throughout Baa Atoll, including colourful reef fish, sea turtles, manta rays and thriving coral reefs. The session also explored global environmental challenges affecting the world's oceans and highlighted how responsible tourism, waste reduction and everyday sustainable choices contribute to healthier marine ecosystems.

The educational programme continued with a guided snorkelling experience on Milaidhoo's vibrant house reef, giving students the opportunity to observe coral formations and marine species in their natural habitat while reinforcing lessons learned during the morning presentation.

Students also participated in coral planting activities as part of Milaidhoo's ongoing reef restoration programme. By helping plant coral fragments, they gained first-hand experience of the important role coral reefs play in protecting the Maldives' coastlines, supporting marine biodiversity and sustaining local livelihoods.

The event concluded with a celebratory gathering where students, teachers, parents and the Milaidhoo Family shared refreshments while reflecting on the day's experiences and the importance of working together to protect the ocean.

"The ocean is part of our identity as Maldivians and something many of us have grown up alongside," said Abdulla Mufeed, Base Leader at Milaidhoo Maldives.

"When young people have the opportunity to explore the reef, learn about marine life and understand the challenges our oceans face, they form a connection that stays with them. We hope today's visit inspires curiosity, respect and a sense of responsibility towards protecting the natural environment that is so important to all of us."

Through environmental education programmes, marine conservation projects and close collaboration with neighbouring communities, Milaidhoo Maldives continues to encourage greater awareness of the natural heritage that makes the Maldives one of the world's most remarkable island destinations.

Guests can reach Milaidhoo Maldives via a 35-minute seaplane transfer from Velana International Airport or by a 15-minute domestic flight to Dharavandhoo Airport followed by a 15-minute speedboat journey.
