Australia, 9 December 2022: As part of a review of the Data Privacy Act 1988, the Australian Government plans to empower consumers, protect their data, and serve the Australian economy in the best way possible. An announcement regarding the reviews as part of the Government's response to the competition commission's inquiry into digital platforms. To conduct the review, we will rely on various sources, including responses to two consultation papers from stakeholders on matters falling within its terms of response. Furthermore, feedback gained from discussions with stakeholders on specific subjects & existing research and reports will be taken into account during the review. During the review, the Online Privacy Bill will be introduced, creating a binding Online Privacy code for social media platforms and certain other platforms. In addition, it will enhance enforcement measures and increase penalties.
