WEBSTER, TX July 7, 2026 A new analysis of local business websites throughout the greater Houston area has revealed that an astonishing 83% are still not Google compliant as we enter the second half of 2026. The study, commissioned by CRM Digital, a comprehensive Web Design and Digital Marketing company serving the towns of Webster, Houston, Pasadena, Friendswood, and Texas City, spotlights a rapidly expanding chasm between the local businesses that are winning search and those that are losing customers to competitors.
The review assessed hundreds of micro and mid-sized business websites against the baseline Google now assumes as givens (mobile-friendly, fast loading, robust Core Web Vitals, secure HTTPS, markup languages, all-keyword rich, authentic content). The common denominator was evident. Most websites are old (from years prior) and unmaintained, never optimized for the contemporary customer searching experience.
The findings of the study
Approximately 80% of sites failed at least one core standard, with many failing several at once. The most frequent failures were slow-loading pages on mobile, missing or thin copy that provided no meaningful info to search engines, and a lack of local SEO signals (consistent NAP, location pages, schema). Almost half had no effective copywriting strategy, so there was no content on the page capable of attracting and converting searchers.
What isn‘t always visible on a balance sheet, that is, the cost of the gaps is often a big reason they stay. A business owner may notice the phone ringing less often but may not connect that to a trailing website the one Google has quietly pushed to the fourth page. “Most owners believe their site is OK because it appears to be OK,” the research observes. “But appearing OK and doing well in search are two very different things.”
The reasons why local business continue to fall behind
Our findings indicate three reasons for this trend: First, several of the sites were built simply as online brochures, not as tools to generate leads through calls or websited them unexpectedly. Second, Google‘s rules are getting harder and harder Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, and content quality scores all improved significantly over the past two years yet most sites didn‘t. Third, small teams don‘t always have the time or the skills to balance constant SEO, Website Design updates, and content on top of all the rest of running the business.
The end result is a compounding disadvantage. Anyone competing with you in Professional Web Development, WordPress Web Design, and consistent content pummels the rankings while everyone else becomes increasingly easy to locate.
A note from CRM Digital
The good news from this report is that “nearly every failure we identified is easily correctable,” said a representative of CRM Digital. “You‘re not talking about unusual problems here: slow pages, missing local SEO signals, or sites that weren‘t written for users or search engines in the first place. When we rebuild a site, much like we did with these clients, users are happy because they‘re presented with a fast, mobile-friendly site that satisfies their immediate needs, while search engines are happy because local companies are seeing definitive results, more calls, more form leads in a short time.”
What business owners can do now
To help local businesses hit the ground running, CRM Digital advises the following simple audit: browse the site on your phone, examine its load speed, verify that the HTTPS is on, and look up the business the way a customer might. An owner who finds a slow, old, difficult-to-locate site is probably one of the 83%. From there, the agency works with businesses to bring them up to speed in Website Design and Web Development, technical Search Engine Optimization, content writing, and lead-generation campaigns that combine Search Engine Optimization with Google pay-per-click and social media marketing.
