Beyond the Resorts: How Rental Cars Are Changing the Way Visitors Explore Crete

HERAKLION, Crete - September’2026 - Ask most people what a Crete holiday looks like, and they'll describe a resort pool, a beach chair, maybe a day trip booked through the hotel desk. That picture is starting to look outdated.

More visitors are picking up a set of car keys the moment they land and driving off on their own terms. At Cretarent, a local car hire company operating across the island, staff say they've watched this shift happen in real time over the past few seasons and it's changing not just how tourists spend their week, but which parts of Crete actually see them.

We used to get mostly airport-to-resort bookings, quick and simple," said Kerry Portokalaki, owner of Cretarent. "Now people come in with a list some village up in the hills their grandmother told them about, a beach that doesn't show up on the big tour bus routes. They want the car for the whole trip, not just a transfer.

It's not hard to see why. Crete isn't a small island it runs well over 250 kilometers east to west and a lot of what makes it worth visiting sits far from the coastal hotel strip. Mountain roads lead to villages that have barely changed in decades. Gorges and coves that are a pain to reach by bus are a straightforward drive with your own car.

Heraklion, as the island's main airport and largest city, has turned into the natural starting point for these trips. Car hire Crete bookings tend to cluster there, and Cretarent says Heraklion car rental pickups now happen almost immediately after arrivals land visitors heading straight for the road rather than checking into a resort first.

There's a knock-on effect too. Locals have noticed villages inland the kind that used to see almost no tourist traffic now getting visitors stopping for lunch or coffee. That money used to stay on the coast. Now it's reaching places that never really got a share of it before.

Whether that trend keeps building next season remains to be seen, but for now, the rental car not the resort shuttle is doing a lot of the work in shaping how people actually experience Crete.
