Caring Critters and the Alphabet They Share by Donna L. Botteen uses playful critters to teach kids ABCs alongside values like kindness, respect, and empathy through stories and vivid illustrations.

Parents and educators often wonder how to teach children more than just the basics. How do we raise kids who not only know their letters, but also understand empathy, fairness, and respect? Caring Critters and the Alphabet They Share, a new book by Donna L. Botteen, answers that question with warmth and creativity.
This is not a typical ABC book. Each page introduces a “critter” which pairs a letter with a value that matters in daily life. Ava Antelope models apology, Gracie Giraffe shows generosity through giving, and Katie Kangaroo spreads kindness like sunshine. These lessons are delivered in simple, playful language that children can absorb, remember, and practice in their own lives.
“Stories give children a safe way to explore feelings and choices,” said Botteen. “Through the critters, they realize that honesty, respect, and caring aren’t just words; they’re actions that shape who we become.”
Illustrator Alexis Droege adds vivid color and warmth to every page, turning abstract values into tangible moments. When Sophie Squirrel shares or Ellis Eagle teaches equality, the illustrations invite children to connect emotionally with what they see. This makes lessons on patience, fairness, and leadership feel real and lasting.
The book goes beyond literacy by encouraging conversations at home and in classrooms.
Parents can pause mid-story and ask, “What would you do if you were Quinn Quail?” or “How can we show respect like Raymond Raccoon?” These simple questions transform story time into meaningful exchanges that help children practice kindness in everyday situations.
