More international travelers are booking Uganda tours this year, according to regional tour operators, with demand concentrated around mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and boat trips on the River Nile.

With such a diversity of wildlife in this beautiful country there are many places where you will feel at ease watching amazing animals up close, from tropical forests full of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, to savannas filled with lions, elephants, hippos and birdlife, found in Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls National Park.

The Kibale forest has some of the best chimpanzee experiences. There are also many wetlands which make great spots to watch birds and hippos. In an effort to reduce stress on the animals the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) have set a cap on how many tourists can come into contact with each group of gorillas per day. This means you’ll be able to enjoy them in small groups without having to wait in lines for your turn – just sit back relax with your guide and enjoy every moment!
"People come expecting to see gorillas. They usually leave talking about the ranger who walked them through the forest for six hours," said a representative for Around Africa Safaris, a Uganda-based tour operator. "That's the part that gets people recommending the trip to friends."

A few things are driving the interest. Gorilla trekking permits, while capped, are easier to secure in Uganda than in Rwanda, where prices are higher. The country is also small enough that a single trip can combine a forest trek, a river cruise, and two or three national parks without long transfer days. Some itineraries now include walks with the Batwa, a forest-dwelling community displaced from Bwindi when it became a national park in 1991.

The peak travel season is Uganda’s two dry seasons (December-February & June-September) with better weather and higher animal concentrations on hiking trails.
