KAMPALA, Uganda — July 28, 2026 — Uganda safari bookings are up this year, and gorilla trekking is the main reason why. Local tour operators say interest in mountain gorilla treks has pushed overall demand for Uganda safaris higher than in previous seasons.

The mountain gorilla’s natural environment is represented in Uganda by one of its most important wild habitats—the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Tourists are supposed to walk in the jungle along with armed rangers to see the gorilla family for an hour and observe their eating, playing, and resting options. By taking special permits, there is a limit on the number of trekkers visiting the area in one day.

Although Uganda is often seen as the country where one should come to enjoy mountain gorilla trekking, there are other activities available – including chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, boat trips along the Nile, and safari trips in Queen Elizabeth National Park, which is the only park in Africa with a population of tree-climbing lions.

"You don't get people booking a list anymore. They want to spend time with the animals, not just pass by," said one of the spokesmen for And Venture Around Africa Safaris. "Gorilla trekking does that better than almost anything else we offer."

In 2012, Lonely Planet declared Uganda as its number one destination, and the country has stayed on a similar list ever since. People really wish to take gorilla permits here; for that reason, permits are sold out throughout the months before December and during the school holiday period, forcing some travellers to book permits much sooner than before.
